Comments Etiquette

When someone leaves a comment on your blog, how do you handle it?

That is, do you reply to every comment that is left on your blog? If so, how... by e-mail or by leaving another comment?

Or do you not reply to any comments?

I usually try to reply to the comment author via e-mail to let them know I read and appreciated their comment, but I'm curious how others handle it.

Let me know.

I usually TRY to respond to each and every comment by email. Often that doesn't always happen when the comments get too high and I get too busy. Rarely will I comment within the post unless I feel my response is something that others need to hear.

I play it by ear. If the commentor seems to be wanting a response from me, then I will generally resond in an e-mail. I never respond in the comments because to me, the comment section is for the visitors to resond to what they have read. I don't want the comments to become a message board. Also, I try to catch anyone who is leaving a comment for the first time and I will send them an e-mail thanking and welcoming them. I don't even get tons of comments and I would find it hard to respond to each one. I don't know what really popular bloggers would do.

I do the same too: answering comments by e-mail. I always appreciate them (well they have always been cool for the moment, that's the reason) and as I don't have too many, it's easy to answer personally to everyone.

For me it's entirely based on how much time I have. I'll either 1) reply to the comment on my blog if I'm in a hurry, 2) email, if I have time, or 3) just read it if, as usual, I don't have time to do anything else. If people actually read my blog, they probalby know I'm a grad student, and I expect (hope) they know I'm busy.

Comments are responses to posts. If the comment is that 'provocative' that it requires a response, I will respond. I have always been hesitant to respond elsewise.

I agree that it really depends on the comment. If I feel like the writer is expecting a response (and the conversation has somewhere to go), I will oftentimes respond with a comment back for everyone to see. In some cases where I appreciated the comment personally, I will respond with a direct email.

So far, I tend to reply in the comments. I don't get that many comments (maybe there aren't that many readers?), so there's no danger of the blog becoming a message board. If the comment were something that warranted a longer, less public response, I'd send an e-mail message.

I was wondering about this myself. I recently noticed how you and Mark always reply to my comments. But I kind of felt that this was because we've become blogger friends. I always make a point of commenting on your posts because of that.

But I have to agree with some of the others. If someone just posts a simple statement, I don't usually feel compelled to reply. Or if it seems to be a rhetorical question. And I post on other people's blogs who never respond but that hasn't stopped me from continuing to post comments on their sites.

It all depends on the nature of the post which generated the comment. If the post is about something that's troubling me, or something I'm looking for some feedback about, I'll respond to the comments. If it's about a picture I've posted or just a random thought that I wanted to share, I probably won't respond.

However, I will be much more likely to visit YOUR blog if you comment. ;-)

It is extremely rare for me to reply to comments. Generally, I don't think comments are a very good forum for discussions, and I don't really try to start any kind of threads on my blog. However, I do respond occasionally, depending on whether someone's asking a question or if there's a need to clarify something.

I recently started responding within the comment, using Haloscan's edit page, putting my response in bold.

But this I do rarely. Even rarer do I write back via email.
