I've been getting some less than kind comments lately that I really just don't feel like dealing with, so I delete them, but I'm starting to feel too much like a government censor.
What are your opinions on deleting comments?

Re: question to the boys and girls
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 10:53 AMWell, for one thing, it makes me want to read your blog to see what you're writing about (smile).
I say that it's your blog and you should feel free to delete away. I don't think of it as censoring but as cleaning house. But then, I just began my blog so perhaps some more experienced bloggers may think different.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 11:24 AMThere should always be a limit to what you tolerate in comments. Spam, hatred, absue, off-topic or off-color comments should not be tolerated, unless that is what you expect. As long as you are not deleting every criticism of you, you have the right maintain the dignity of your blog. It is not censorship, since they can still find their own forum for abuse.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 12:34 PMI'm of the mindset that I only delete comments that are in poor taste. If they are just slamming me, I leave 'em. After all they are people's opinions. -

Re: question to the boys and girls
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 2:00 PMI've been known to only edit comments left on my site for two reasons: SPAM (that's a no-brainer) and any comment that disparages another reader who has left a comment on my site. Flaming is one thing, but attacking someone else via my site is another. I feel like an old school marm: "Take it outside, guys."

Re: question to the boys and girls
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 2:20 PMThe only comments that I've deleted so far have been spam. If someone were just being mean or, as Corin said, slamming another blogger via my comments, then i wouldn't hesitate in deleting the comment.
It's your blog; you can keep/delete anything you like.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 3:38 PMI think my opinion of comments is best encapsulated by something I read on a T-shirt today: "No need to speak up, I was ignoring you anyway." It may be hypocritical, seeing that I leave comments freely on my friends' blogs, but I don't have comments and don't really care to have them. If they want to give their two cents, they can start their own fucking blog.
It's your forum, and your rules. You get to decide. -

Re: question to the boys and girls
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 3:55 PMI've really never understood the need to have comments on a blog, it's just one more thing you have to police and fuss over.
I think of our sites as our own countries, where we are supreme dictators (dick takers?) and what we say is law.
After all, if people want to vent or tell you how they feel about a particular post, there is always the giant email link most people have on their sites if they can be bothered to reem you a new one. No comments on a blog = less annoying people sending you all sorts of stuff/spam/flames.
Just my two cents.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 5:16 PMWell it's your blog, delete at your leisure.
As for me, I don't delete unless it's a direct attack against me or someone else on the comment list. Said offender, gets one warning then I ban their IP address if the problem continues. I've only had to delete a few in the space of a year. And of those I had to ban one.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 9:44 PMLike others have mentioned so far, I tend to delete if it's spam or an attack on myself or another commenter (especially if the attacker is commenting anonymously.)
-
Re: question to the boys and girls
Sun, September 4, 2005 - 12:15 AMI will delete comments on a couple different criteria:
-It has no value, like "Burn in hell faggot"
-It attacks another commentor (which hasn't happened yet)
or
-It is infactual response to something I've wrote, like "The Bush Administration didn't cut New Orleans flood control funding."
I don't mind if you argue against something I've said, but don't post comments that aren't true.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Mon, September 5, 2005 - 8:22 PMIf they've got the balls to come to my site and leave their email or site address, then I leave them usually unless the comment is really horrible.. If they're chickenshit and do it anonymously, then I remove them. -

Re: question to the boys and girls
Mon, September 5, 2005 - 10:53 PMi'm kind of thinking (for me) the best answer is to disable comments in their entirety. I've noticed that my writing has been more focused on getting comments than writing for me. So I've deleted all comments and once I figure out how to get my site back up... I'll be writing again only this time for myself.
Commenters be damned.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Mon, September 5, 2005 - 10:59 PMI moderate my comments only to keep spam out. Otherwise, I will let it through. Good, bad, or ugly. The way I feel is that if I can't deal with the negative comments the positive ones have no validity.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Tue, September 6, 2005 - 8:08 PMI'm probably echoing others here, but for me, it depends on how the comment was left. A signed comment stands a better chance of being left alone than one left anonymously. I'm of the opinion that anonymous commenters lack the balls (or the boobs, take your pick) to stand by their words.
If someone is repeatedly leaving meanspirited comments, I ban them altogether, and if I think it's necessary, I'll take action against them. (i.e., reporting them to their ISP)
Bottom line, your journal is your house. If people can't play by your rules, they can leave.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Wed, September 7, 2005 - 1:33 PMI've not encountered a comment that I needed to delete. I don't really venture into the controversial, and I guess I'm just not that widely read either. That wasn't much help, was that?

Re: question to the boys and girls
Thu, September 8, 2005 - 5:13 PMoops. Browserr rerouted me to the wrong page.
My actual post in this thread would be:
People can post what they want. I sometimes use them as examples to others of the shallowness and ignorance of others. Comments provide good blog fodder. The comments I would delete would be ads and offers of sex-enhancement pills.
Because i don't need them.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Fri, September 9, 2005 - 4:54 AMNever really had a problem other than spam. However, just yesterday someone (ex friend) commented correcting my spelling and even suggested that I delete his comment. I left it on to show what a jerk he was and a couple of friends even commented back at him for correcting me. Nice...

Re: question to the boys and girls
Sun, September 11, 2005 - 9:17 AMI have only had to delete one comment (well, one comment that wasn't SPAM...at least I can filter those now). As long as the comment isn't simply a hate-filled attack then it can stay.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Sat, October 8, 2005 - 6:11 PMLike several others, I will only delete spam...if I didn't want opinions (good or bad), I would turn that feature off in my blog.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Thu, October 20, 2005 - 5:22 PMI've never deleted a comment. Fortunately, I'm not plagued by spam.
I figure if someone says something stupid or offensive, then it should stay up for all the world to see.
I have edited one though. It was a case when someone revealed some rather personal information about someone else that wasn't appropriate. I deleted the info and appended a note saying I edited it out. -

Re: question to the boys and girls
Thu, October 20, 2005 - 7:14 PMEditied content is a very tricky scenario. The last several decisions surrounding the legal responsibility of blogs for third party comments are intersting. Clear distinctions are made between providing a forum for content to be viewed, or actively formulating opinion or directing flow of content. Intention of the blog owner was decided in part on whether comments were editied.
Theory being that when you edit or alter expressed and intended form of a contributor, whether in matters of taste or opinion, it is placing yourself partially responsible for the content, vs. if you decide to let all stand and speak for itself as simply a forum for views. The hard fact of that if you have ever, even once altered a comment, (spam that is obvious is not considered) you have substantially increased your legal responsibility in terms of what you provide a forum for.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Sat, November 5, 2005 - 10:53 PMI am not getting bad comments, just stupid SPAM. I delete and have blocked anonymous comments to my blog. Didn't want to do this; but is the only way to keep the spam from cluttering up legitimate comments.

Re: question to the boys and girls
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 10:50 PMHey it's your blog. You should feel free to weed out whatever you like, imho. If you're feeling uncomfortable about it, maybe you can explore what you're deleting and why in a separate entry. It will allow you to vent whatever it is that's driving you to want to delete comments, and may open up a rather interesting dialog with the offending commenters.
Hi everyone. I'm new here!

Re: question to the boys and girls
Mon, November 14, 2005 - 8:55 AMI don't think I've every deleted a comment. I figure if someone wants to be an asshole, it's better for their comment to remain in place for all the world to see.
