(Get your mind out of the gutter! Deep Linking is not a sexual euphemism!)
I have some various videos I host on my blog. Recently I discovered another site was deep linking to my videos (that is, they linked directly to the video files and not to the blog page where the links were). I contacted the person who posted the deep links and asked them to change the links to the blog page instead. I got a very sarcastic reply back from them (although they did comply).
Is my thinking wrong here? I have always considered deep linking to audio, video, or even large picture files as stealing bandwidth from the host of those files. When someone deep links to one of my video files, they are bypassing my blog completely while I still get charged with the bandwidth usage (and yes, I have plently of bandwidth- that's not the issue).
What do you think?

Re: Deep Linking
Sun, September 11, 2005 - 10:38 PMYou are definatly not wrong in your view of this. It is the same as stealing! Corparit America say's that downloading music and movies is stealing. But this is okay? I don't think so, allthough I do feal that borrowing music is not a crime. It is as if someone else is taking credit for your work. -

Sun, September 11, 2005 - 10:49 PMThey are leaching your bandwidth. It ain't cool. You pay for it, they don't.
There are ways of blocking hotlinking to your site with various permissions you can set from your control panel that most web providers give you. It's called htaccess.

Every now and then, it's good to change up your directory names and reapply every few months just to keep the fuck-ups from posting it on say, their Livejournal postings with insightful captions like "OMG! LOL!" and really indepth commentary like that.
Good luck! ;)

Mon, September 12, 2005 - 4:51 AMHow did you find out they were linking to your files and where they were located? -

Re: Deep Linking
Mon, September 12, 2005 - 1:03 PMI assume (yes, I know it's dangerous) that he just looked at his webserver logs and read the referrer link was not on his server.
It's always a good idea to check your logs periodically for just such an intrusion (also to make sure you've got no broken links or to keep track of your traffic -- who's visiting your site, where they're coming from etc)

Re: Deep Linking
Mon, September 12, 2005 - 7:25 AMWell, yes and no as I see it. If they were embedding the video from your server into one of their web pages, then yes, you have absolutely every right to ask them not to. That affects your site's bandwidth allowance, and therefore, the expense that comes with overages. (There are ways to prevent this on your end, including the use of .htaccess files.)
If, however, they were merely providing a link, then it becomes a bit less cut and dried. Simply including a text link to a file on your server will not use your bandwidth until someone clicks on it. I get the impression from your post that this is what happened, and perhaps this is why you got the response you did from the deep linker -- they probably didn't think what they did was wrong.
Either way, the bottom line is "your server -- your rules"; you may want to look into protecting the media folders on your server from deep linkers. (Again, a .htaccess file may help.)

Re: Deep Linking
Mon, September 12, 2005 - 10:03 AMIt is rude and as everyone said, it does use up your bandwith. May not be a problem today but why wait till it is. A polite email is fine. You may consider posting a caption or link asking people to not deep link to your site.
The person was probably nasty because you busted them on it. They knew it was rude. If they do it again, just block their IP on your server.

Mon, September 12, 2005 - 6:41 PMI would have changed the file name and adjusted the links, and blocked the IP for a period. Hell with the niceties of an email. -

Tue, September 13, 2005 - 6:44 AMIndeed. I think customary practice is to swap out the file in question with one depicting graphic sexual practices that would make their mother have a heart attack.
