What is the best Blog service to use?

topic posted Mon, May 15, 2006 - 6:00 AM by  offlineKatranon
currently i am using blogspot.com and i don't use it often cuz it really isn't fun. i have limited choices of backgrounds (and i'm not script savvy enough to alter it myself), and trying to load pictures is really clunky- it involves using another software program called "hello," but if the url is too long, it won't accept the picture anyway. so i don't do much with my blog. i maybe update it once a month. and of course, i get spammed in my "comments" by people trying to sell me shit- which just pisses me off to no end.

-any suggestions fellas?

    hiya.
I've used blogger for a year now and have found it pretty user friendly.
Through observation & trial and error, I figured out how to manipulate my template and personalize it a little bit. Also, there is a new little icon at the top of your box when posting that looks like a small picture. All you have to do is click it and it posts a pic for you w/o using "hello."
Anyway, I've really gotten into it, and have learned a lot along the way.
    Best of luck with yours.

Thanx Thomas. Maybe playing with it more is a good idea- no innuendo intended! ;>

i've used the Hello thing and that is what seems to take so much time in getting the pictures up. don't i have to send it to myself via the hello thing, then post it as a pic? i haven't done it for awhile so that is my hazy memory of it.

      thanks again,
      Kman

        Hi,
Yes, Hello & Picassa can take a lot of time. Like I mentioned, blogger.com has a little icon on the top of each new post box that looks like a landscape or something. If you click that, you can upload pics w/o having or using Hello & Picassa. I can upload directly from my camera or computer.
So if you can figure that out, you do not have to send yourself a pic via Hello.
        Good Luck.
        Cheers,
        Thomasco

I recommend wordpress.com! Completely free, no ads, built-in spamstopper (Akismet), nice selection of themes, cool widgets, good comments/pingback/trackback function (no need for things like Haloscan) and lots more.

Even though I think Blogger (blogspot.com) is a great free service I must say I prefer WordPress for just about everything. (I used Blogger (blogspot.com) for my blog a couple a years ago before switching to WordPress and haven't looked back since! :)) I use the self-hosted version of WordPress (from wordpress.org) but the free, hosted version is almost as good!

    Try it yourself at: wordpress.com

I second that. It's very comprehensive and I love all that it does. If you host with Dreamhost - they offer a one click install of WordPress - which makes it wicked easy to start using.

Doesn't Blogspot put adds on your blog? I know they host it as opposed to you hosting it... I just like having full control and the admin tools for it, plus the little add ons I enjoy. But I'm a code geek... :P

yeah, i don't know jack about code. but there are only ads if i choose to sign up for that. i think the fact that i don't know how to manipulate codes keeps blogs in the cut and paste mode regardless of the provider. unless there are other blog services that give the user more tools with simplier interfaces.

I use blogger and you're right it is limited. I've also taken the time to learn some code and mess around with the templates. It's not easy to edit them if you haven't worked with code before.

Remember the most important thing is your content. I think the best blogs have fun stuff from the web, pictures and personal anecdotes. There are all kinds of poll services quizzes and the like.

Personally, I wish the blogger community were more interactive. But, that's part of the reason I'm here on Tribe and Gather.com.

If you're just looking for an easier method to post, try Zoundry Blog Writer. It works with Blogger and many of the other free services. You can write posts offline and preview them, as they will appear with your template.
